Neither me nor my dog deal very well with the heat. We both spend our days seeking out shady spots to hide in and trying to expend as little energy as possible. Sage, with her medium length black fur coat, really suffers during hot days. So, heading up to the cooler, shady Troodos mountains is a great way to pass the hottest days. </div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We've spent a lot of time in this area, hiking the nature trails, eating and drinking in the small villages, staying in some of the lovely Agrotourism accommodation available there. It always feels much cooler there (so much so that we froze up there in April last year while it was almost beach weather in the coastal areas), and we have even managed to hike some of the more covered, woodland trails in mid summer. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Our most recent visit was last weekend. We drove as far as the lovely, shady Platres, and spent some time exploring the village. A friend of mine was visiting, so we took her to see the Caledonian Waterfalls (that I've written about in a previous post, <a href="http://bit.ly/1nZONhf" target="_blank">here</a>). Also in this are are the Milomeris Waterfalls, which are at the end of a short walk through woodland, although these falls attract more visitors so a bit less chance to let your dog run around freely, see my review <a href="http://travelcypruswithyourdog.blogspot.com/2013/09/hike-or-drive-to-milomeris-waterfalls.html" target="_blank">here</a>. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This was the first time in several days that I had seen Sage really running around, frollicking even, clearly loving the icy water and shady paths. There were quite a few visitors there, some with their dogs too, including a family who had brought their dog on holiday with them from Russia! Most people kept their dogs on their leads. I find this really tough as there are relatively few places I can let Sage really run at her own speed, to go and sniff whatever she likes, to jump in the water freely - I don't want to ruin her fun. However, I suppose as it gets to summer time and the trails are busier with families and holiday-makers, dog owners may have to have this in mind. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have read reviews saying that there was little or no water in the Falls during the summer. These waterfalls are not spectacular and visitors should not expect Niagra Falls here, but the enjoyment comes from following the lovely woodland paths, looking at unusual and endemic species of plant life, crossing the stream on small rickety bridges, enjoying the cooler mountain air and the contrast to the wildlife and climate of the rest of the island. </div>

<br />
After a long walk (and bit of a swim for some of us) we went to have lunch in Pano Platres. I am sure many of these places would have accepted dogs in the outdoors areas of the cafes/restaurants, but we chose somewhere that looked big with plenty of space to sit with Sage out of the way of other customers. This was Antonis Cafe, on the main road through Pano Platres just by the municipal parking and tourist information area.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">At Antonis Cafe, Platres</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The staff were very friendly and didn't have any problem with Sage being there. They made an effort to produce a vegetarian option for us, although I think the usual menu is sandwiches/burgers/snacks. A very large fresh salad, halloumi, bread, olives, tahini, 2 beers and water came to just 15€.<br />
<br />
<br />
We finished our day out with a coffee stop at a place that I am a bit ambivalent about. Green Valley Waterfall Cafe is on the road from Lemesos up to Troodos, in Trimiklini. It has a large open patio space with tables, as well as a covered area, and, what makes it special, a lovingly made path down to some waterfalls absolutely full of plants and animals. I wrote about it <a href="http://travelcypruswithyourdog.blogspot.com/2013/07/picnic-your-way-down-to-green-valley.html" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
I thoroughly recommend spending the 5€ entrance fee to drink your coffee or have a picnic down at these waterfalls. What I don't recommend, however, is sitting with your (female?) dog in the cafe itself. The owner has two small but rather aggressive female dogs that have tried pretty hard to attack Sage on two occasions now. I understand the territory issue, but I was annoyed that I could not enjoy my coffee without fear of being attacked. If you have your dog with you, just head on down to the waterfalls for a more relaxing, peaceful experience.<br />

There is so much to explore in this area and it provides a very welcome break from the heat and bustle of the coast. Your dog will love it too.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</tbody></table>
Trying to watch the games while out and about in Larnaca with my large dog has been a challenge. We have found a couple of favourites, and it has motivated me to try out a few different places that I had noticed but hadn't got around to. We have also been turned away from quite a few!<br />
<br />
<br />
While trying to catch Germany vs Portugal last week, the bar I had planned to go to was closed, the game begun, we were turned away from several places, and I was feeling hot and bothered trying to watch on a distant screen from outside a popular coffee shop... when I heard the commentary from the neighbouring rooftop cafe bar Le Jardin, and decided to give it a go.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VQUpNMIqZrU/U6rPh50tguI/AAAAAAAACT4/4bemlJjTJ_I/s1600/Photo0100.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VQUpNMIqZrU/U6rPh50tguI/AAAAAAAACT4/4bemlJjTJ_I/s1600/Photo0100.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Le Jardin Cafe Bar</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Le Jardin Cafe Bar is on Grigori Afxentiou Street, which ends at Larnaca Police Station, opposite from the Easy Hotel.<br />
<br />
<br />
I had noticed this bar on previous trips to town, and thought it looked nice from the outside, but had not expected them to accept dogs and therefore put off giving it a go.<br />
<br />
<br />
Le Jardin is beautifully decorated with lots of plants, comfortable sofas, inviting lighting. Everyone in there was immediately very friendly and gave Sage a lot of attention. There was another group already there with their dog, a friendly Pomeranian who seemed like quite a regular there.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3hFMKsp4n-s/U6rPlqylmVI/AAAAAAAACUA/DxwikXZ3MDc/s1600/Photo0101.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3hFMKsp4n-s/U6rPlqylmVI/AAAAAAAACUA/DxwikXZ3MDc/s1600/Photo0101.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The match was showing in the early evening, and as it started to get dark I was half distracted from the tvs by the hundreds of swallows diving around the skies around the rooftop bar, as well as by the changing colours from the setting sun. Despite being situated on a main, busy road, as soon as you climb the stairs up to the bar, it is very easy to forget you in the middle of town.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fwHv1_1Fchc/U6rPsr4tkII/AAAAAAAACUM/pHowHWmjn2E/s1600/Photo0103.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fwHv1_1Fchc/U6rPsr4tkII/AAAAAAAACUM/pHowHWmjn2E/s1600/Photo0103.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
From Sage's point of view, it was nice to get so much attention, but there wasn't much space for her to stretch out as the bar is quite small and narrow. Especially once it got dark, I was quite anxious that someone would step on her as I couldn't really find a corner to hide her away.<br />
<br />
<br />
From the football point of view, this was a lovely place to watch the game. There were 2 tv screens in the early evening, and as it got dark they projected the screen onto the white wall at one end of the bar so it was even easier to get a good view.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
The bar serves cocktails and bottles of beer, as well as sandwiches and wraps. I paid a fairly standard €3 for a coffee.<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Le Jardin is a beautifully decorated bar, with a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Simply because of its size and lay out, I might advise taking a large dog somewhere where there is a bit more space, although it's great to have more options, particularly when they are as nice as this one. </div>

Recently my criteria for choosing a bar to go to in Cyprus just became a little bit harder. Sage just loves football, so at the moment I'm looking for places that not only accept pets, but that are also showing the World Cup. I'm on the look out for dog-friendly bars with garden or terrace areas, and screens outside. Extra points goes to bars with good cheap food, friendly service, and wide range of drinks, of course.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Depot</td></tr>

We have tried out a couple in the last few days, and our current favourite is The Depot, which is on the beach road just beyond the Fortress at Finikoudes (in the direction of Macenzie Beach). This bar/grill is in a lovely location, especially now work has finished on the walkway by the sea here. If you are not a football fan, you could happily spend your time looking out over the water, and people watching. This 'promenade' was also quite good for a halftime walk with Sage!<br />

Staff at The Depot were very friendly to us, petting Sage, and offering to bring her water. There was plenty of space for Sage to sit out of the way of the other customers, while we still had a good view of the (3!!!) large screens showing the World Cup. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Drinks were fairly cheap here, about 2.5€ for a large Carlsberg/Keo beer, 2-3€ for a coffee. We also ordered some amazing homemade chips and grilled vegetable wrap, and both dishes cost under 5€.</div>

Attention to detail is visible in the decoration both inside and out at The Depot. I loved the use of the breeze blocks from the wall as plant pots and the strange lamps from recycled wine bottles. The large central bar inside also fits well with the style and shape of the building.</div>

</tbody></table>
While on our 'Spring break' in Latchi this year, we tried out a couple of the local tavernas and restaurants, with the usual criteria: 1) how's the food, and 2) can I bring my dog along?<br />
<br />
As it was early in the year, mid April, not all the places were open, and some had only a very limited menu. The Sea Crest Restaurant, by the small harbour area, was one of the few places still open during the evening. As we approached I felt the owner and staff nervously eyeing up our big dog.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Outdoors seating area at Sea Crest Restaurant</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Once we said we were happy to sit outside they were extremely friendly and helpful, although I did gather that dogs would definitely not be welcome inside the restaurant (fair enough).<br />
<br />
<br />
It was a bit cold, and we had to keep our coats on while eating - but there are very few months in Cyprus where it's too cold to sit outside of an evening. I also really enjoyed sitting by the water and looking at the boats; to me it only feels like a holiday if you can sit out by the sea and eat fish.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">View of small harbour from the Sea Crest Restaurant</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
We had octopus and small fried (whitebait-type) fish, salad, wine, and paid around 15€ per person, which seems a fairly typical price for the more touristy areas of Cyprus.<br />
<br />
<br />
The owner turned out to be very friendly, and quite an animal-lover himself. He gave Sage quite a lot of attention, and brought out a plate of bones for her (so absolutely no reason for the "I'm so hungry" face in the first picture!<br />

I love this part of the island and would be very happy to spend more time exploring around here. This is the second time we've visited Akamas; last year we hiked the Aphrodite trail, this year we hiked the Adonis trail, as well as spending some time exploring the northern part of the peninsula. Both times we visited the Akamas area it was very early in the season (April this year) and there were very few people around. Also the weather was perfect for hiking; some of these paths would be very hard work in the heat of the Cypriot summer!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E9teFpnJUrM/U3kVT7exj8I/AAAAAAAACQE/nFEdXb_-l-M/s1600/SAM_5025.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-E9teFpnJUrM/U3kVT7exj8I/AAAAAAAACQE/nFEdXb_-l-M/s1600/SAM_5025.JPG" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The day that we just bimbled along the coastal path from the Baths of Aphrodite, I was just recovering from a cold and was feeling quite unwell. I had in mind a very short, easy walk to the first small beach I remembered seeing from the path when we were following the Aphrodite trail last year. We didn't have much of a plan, except to walk a bit, enjoy being by the sea, and let Sage have a run around.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MQHlm3t1t-Y/U3kVRu2lMQI/AAAAAAAACP4/c4H6V0OJfls/s1600/SAM_5033.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MQHlm3t1t-Y/U3kVRu2lMQI/AAAAAAAACP4/c4H6V0OJfls/s1600/SAM_5033.JPG" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We followed the path along past where we had previously turned up the mountain for the Aphrodite trail, and shortly afterwards found a way down to the sea. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<br />
Around this point I had a little run in with a group of people speeding through the wildlife on quad bikes. It seemed like an organised trip, which makes this even worse in my opinion. They came by us really fast, whipping up the dust in our faces. Of course we held Sage and got out of the way fast, but I wonder whether the wild animals in the area have the same chances of survival? I wish the CTO would get on the case to preserve one of the last remaining areas of natural beauty on Cyprus' coastline, and restrict the areas where vehicles are allowed to go. Everyone should be entitled to enjoy Cyprus' wildlife, but if the goal is to race through trying to go as fast as possible and make as much noise and dust as possible - doesn't seem like you need to be in an area of outstanding natural beauty, destroying it for everybody else.... gurrrrrumpf.<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-402MRQIImLg/U3kVuhPccEI/AAAAAAAACQc/_5_f0JzZgOo/s1600/SAM_5054.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-402MRQIImLg/U3kVuhPccEI/AAAAAAAACQc/_5_f0JzZgOo/s1600/SAM_5054.JPG" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
Anyway...</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There are a few small pebbly coves along here. While we were here there were a couple of groups of walkers and families, but not too many that it felt busy. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I was very tempted by the sea here, but was trying to get over my cold; it probably would have helped, but I wasn't feeling brave..</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Inevitably, our short, easy walk became something quite a bit longer. I have inherited my Dad's trait of always wanting to see what's around the next headland, just going on to the next cove.... and around this patch of coast each time we got around the next headland, there was another inviting looking path or beach or something to tempt me on further.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We didn't get all the way to the tip of the peninsula, I would like to do this whole walk sometime when not feeling unwell. I found some dive companies and boat tours that operate around this coast during the summer months (which could mean it gets a bit busy and hard to have your dog with you in July/August time), which listed some of the points of interest along this stretch. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qMzsMyWNEEU/U3kWdN7JV1I/AAAAAAAACRE/sK55kSSSn0I/s1600/SAM_5072.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qMzsMyWNEEU/U3kWdN7JV1I/AAAAAAAACRE/sK55kSSSn0I/s1600/SAM_5072.JPG" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
After the small beaches, we came to an area of eroded limestone pinnacles and a bit further on was a small cave. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
All along this path you had fantastically blue water to one side, the high Akamas peak to the other side, and in between was a small strip of meadow-land full of massive goats and not much else.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eSyB6MqZz0U/U3kWnY9xGQI/AAAAAAAACRU/Upl1lvXevmw/s1600/SAM_5080.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eSyB6MqZz0U/U3kWnY9xGQI/AAAAAAAACRU/Upl1lvXevmw/s1600/SAM_5080.JPG" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We walked as far as the so-called Amphitheatre. This is a historic limestone quarry, which resembles an amphitheatre due to way the rock was removed. Huge square blocks hewn from the stone has left rows of smoothed stone, separating the quarry from the sea.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gwklTzVk338/U3kWif9LOVI/AAAAAAAACRM/mNvKR1RHQzc/s1600/SAM_5102.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gwklTzVk338/U3kWif9LOVI/AAAAAAAACRM/mNvKR1RHQzc/s1600/SAM_5102.JPG" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Again, we had the whole area to ourselves, and it would have been perfect for swimming had the water just been a little bit warmer (or if I was just a little bit braver!)<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZejOQ1ntNYk/U3kW0RZ2drI/AAAAAAAACRg/_JTr7f47fPQ/s1600/SAM_5106.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZejOQ1ntNYk/U3kW0RZ2drI/AAAAAAAACRg/_JTr7f47fPQ/s1600/SAM_5106.JPG" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Have a look at this <a href="http://www.weheartdiving.com/cyprus-scuba-dive-sites-diving-holidays/akamas/" target="_blank">map and description</a> of the various points of interest around Akamas by the Cyprus diving group - <a href="http://weheartdiving.com/">WeHeartDiving.com</a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I already mentioned that this area may be quite a bit busier in summer. I should also note that there is a serious lack of shade, so if your dog is sensitive to heat, better to go early or late in the day (or better still, visit in April-May when temperatures are not too hot).</div>

For a couple of years we've had a short spring break in the west of the island. Last year, while staying in a village in the mountains between Paphos and Polis Chrysochous, we spent some time exploring the Akamas Peninsular and the coast around Latchi. Although our experience was extremely positive with this place, I do want to have a small grumble about the 'sizeist' attitude landlords and restaurant owners seem to have when it comes to dogs - we were asked what size our dog was - and I can't see what difference it makes. If you claim to be dog friendly, it should not make a difference what size your dog is. And it doesn't even make sense; if you are concerned about damage, asking what <i>age </i>the dog is more relevant, or perhaps even the breed (although obviously I don't approve of this either).</div>

Anyway, the landlord met us, and had no problem with our (slightly bigger than average) dog. He was perfectly nice and friendly, and even gave her a quick pat.<br />
<br />
The apartment we stayed in was big enough for a family of 5! It was huge. (Plenty of space even for a Great Dane!) There was a large open plan living and dining area, with tv, internet access, comfortable seats etc, as well as fully equipped kitchen. We paid 42€ per night.<br />

The external areas were lovely, although not ideal for dog owners.<br />
<br />
At the front of the apartments was a small paved area, with pub-garden table and benches. This was a lovely place to sit, and right by the beach too. However, it was not enclosed and there is a fairly busy road between the apartment and the beach. For inquisitive dogs who like to wander off, probably better to sit out the back...<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">At the front of the apartment</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
At the back of the apartments was a communal garden area with swimming pool, grassy area, and a sad looking tennis court. I'm not sure how our only neighbours felt about Sage peeing on the grassy lawn. We did try to stop her, but she just couldn't resist it. The landlord didn't tell us any 'rules', but I imagine other guests would not want dogs running around by the pool. Again, this area was open, so a bit hard to contain your dog.<br />
<br />
Just next to the apartments was a small area of wasteland that was used for parking, which was very convenient for dog peeing, when we could persuade her away from the grass.<br />
<br />

<br />
While we were there, during early April, there were hardly any tourists around. Probably it gets more difficult to be there with your dog during the high summer season, but in Spring it is great. There is a sign on the beach outside Amalia Apartments, forbidding dogs to bathe, but not actually forbidding them <i>being</i> <i>on the beach</i>... maybe I'm just being pedantic. But there was nobody around to complain anyway.<br />
<br />
It was lovely to open our door and be right on the beach; to be near some amazing places for hiking and exploring, some of the loveliest beaches. I would recommend this area of Cyprus to everyone, and the Amalia Apartments to anyone (with or without a dog) looking for a reasonably priced, self catering apartment by the beach.<br />

We just had a short break in West Cyprus. Just the 3 of us. It was wonderful, and I'm looking forward to posting about the apartment we stayed in, the lovely hikes we went on, the beaches.... <br />
<br />
But for now, I've decided to tell you about a sandwich place we found. Because this wasn't just any old sandwich place. I think this is one of the best places to sit with a beer (and a sandwich) and enjoy the view that we have found, so far, in Cyprus.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-f8leyXxQTug/U1a48mrHsVI/AAAAAAAACKI/buNnufOrPnA/s1600/sw3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-f8leyXxQTug/U1a48mrHsVI/AAAAAAAACKI/buNnufOrPnA/s1600/sw3.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">View from Koulla's Sandwiches</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I mean, look at this place!<br />
<br />
This is Koulla's Sandwiches, just outside the village of Pomos in the West of Cyprus (on Facebook <a href="https://www.facebook.com/KoullasSandwiches" target="_blank">here</a>).<br />
<br />
I loved this place because it was perfectly simple; just a kind of 'burger van', with a couple of shady tables, a more sheltered space for the winter, bathroom, just what you need for a quick stop along the road. But, on the other hand, perched high up on top of a beautiful patch of unspoilt coast, on a quiet part of the road with a back drop of mountains, it had just what you need to happily pass the hours with a beer or two.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IxWKAV14Zzg/U1a5XTAyGCI/AAAAAAAACKQ/PAq2HNLdBTQ/s1600/sw4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IxWKAV14Zzg/U1a5XTAyGCI/AAAAAAAACKQ/PAq2HNLdBTQ/s1600/sw4.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another reason I liked this place was that we had just tried to go to a beach bar a bit further on, towards Latchi, and been put off by prominent 'No Dogs' signs pinned up by the entrance. Of course I understand that not everybody is as dog-obsessed as I am, and some people don't want dogs inside bars and restaurants, but I don't see the problem on an outside patio in a low-key beach bar... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I was pleased to be able to sit somewhere beautiful, with my girl, and enjoy being near the sea and on holiday. </div>
<br />
<br />
Koulla's Sandwiches, as you might have guessed, serves a range of sandwiches, with fillings like halloumi, egg, chicken etc. They are large, filling, and cost less than 5€. <br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Dirt road down to beach from car park</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Sage found this one, while waiting for my flight to arrive from Crete. It's a very useful spot for waiting for loved ones with your dog, or waiting for your dog's flight.<br />
<br />
Just seconds before the final roundabout for Paphos International Airport, take the small turn on your left hand side where you see a few cars parked a bit haphazardly. It seems like some people use this as long-term parking...<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6tNDNdx4_Xw/U07KB7xU-OI/AAAAAAAACIc/cYB2SExy7aE/s1600/airport5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6tNDNdx4_Xw/U07KB7xU-OI/AAAAAAAACIc/cYB2SExy7aE/s1600/airport5.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Car park area</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
This is a great place to leave your car for that half an hour you have to kill before one person leaves - especially if you have a dog. It's free, there is some shade from trees around the edges, and from here you can walk down a short unmade road to a pebbly beach and the sea.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Airport seen from the beach</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The beach is a lovely surprise. It's pebbly, and right next door to the airport, so I don't suppose it's ever going to be one of Cyprus' top 10 beach spots, but it's long, with beautiful turquoise blue water, and nobody around. That suits us just fine, when the aim is to have a run around before or after a long car journey, and to find a discreet place for a pee.<br />
<br />
You can even watch the planes come in, to make sure you don't miss any arrivals. I definitely don't recommend this as a day out in Cyprus with your dog - but as a convenient stop before or after a flight or long car journey, it's a great find!<br />

Laws concerning where pets are and are not allowed to go in Cyprus seem to be constantly changing and absolutely incomprehensible to everybody (perhaps that's the idea..). I have read that a recent change in the law (2010 or 11) allows dogs in public spaces in Cyrus, <i><b>except for beaches and children's play areas</b></i>. This is in accordance with EU legislation. However, I haven't seen much sign of this changing, at least not in Larnaca, Lemesos or Paphos, where public areas such as parks, waterfront etc. still display off-putting signs forbidding dog owners to walk their dogs there. </div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Following the city walls round from Famagusta Gate</td></tr>

So these areas of Nicosia, around the city walls, make quite a refreshing change. By the entrance to the park area at Famagusta Gate, and a little further round in Toufexi Park are signs telling owners to clean up after their dogs, and bins to dispose of dog mess. There are even bags provided, to make it even easier. This is about as close to a dog park as Cyprus gets (with a couple of notable exceptions). </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QLIzNnB9q-o/UzsS3fCZkAI/AAAAAAAACGI/1xaMjL8OHlo/s1600/nic2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QLIzNnB9q-o/UzsS3fCZkAI/AAAAAAAACGI/1xaMjL8OHlo/s1600/nic2.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
These areas are popular with dog walkers of Nicosia, especially in the 'dog-walking rush hours' before and after work. I have been meaning to bring Sage here for a play for a long time, but never getting round to it.<br />
<br />
<br />
The only time we've been here was for the annual Pet Festival, which is held outside the walls at Famagusta Gate, and of course the whole area was full of dogs.<br />
<br />
<br />
There is a Facebook page for a real <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/%CE%A0%CE%B1%CF%81%CE%BA%CE%BF-%CE%B3%CE%B9%CE%B1-%CF%83%CE%BA%CF%85%CE%BB%CE%BF%CF%85%CF%82-%CE%9B%CE%B5%CF%85%CE%BA%CF%89%CF%83%CE%B9%CE%B1-Dog-Park-Nicosia/198862323470585" target="_blank">dog park in Nicosia</a>, which is in a small area of Athalassa Park (dogs are not permitted in the rest of the park).<br />
<br />
<br />
I didn't enjoy this park much when I went; there were no other dogs around, nor bins for dog poo, we got lost and carried a stinking bag of dog poo for about an hour until something close to a monsoon started and we found ourselves running through muddy fields trying to find our way out... I will try again, maybe on a day with no rain forecast, and see if I have a better experience. I would love to find a few areas where Sage can socialise and run about with some canine buddies.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have walked a part of this trail before, from the parking area by Psilo Dendro (just outside of the village of Platres) as far as the waterfalls themselves. This is a lovely, short walk, which I did with my two young nephews. It was a perfect length for that, taking into account time spent climbing rocks and throwing sticks and getting stuck on one side of the river or the other... I wrote about it <a href="http://travelcypruswithyourdog.blogspot.gr/2013/07/caledonian-falls-troodos-with-your-dog.html" target="_blank">here</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

We did this hike sometime in February. There were a few people around, a couple of other groups with dogs, but it definitely wasn't too busy to have Sage there with us. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First you walk a few metres from the car park to the start of the trail, going by a paddock of horses, before continuing along the trail which runs through the woods. This first stage of the trail is only about 1.5km, but is a bit difficult - the path is a bit uneven and you have to scramble a bit. It is lovely though, following the river through the woods, seeing strawberry trees and pines.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Strawberry tree (Arbutus andrachne)</td></tr>

<div style="text-align: left;">
After a short while, the path opens up and you see the Falls. I've yet to see them in the summer months, but they are pretty spectacular during winter.</div>

From here the route is a incessantly uphill, and I found it a bit hard going. You are walking <i>up </i>the river gorge, and it takes some effort. Still, the surroundings are lovely. We hardly met anyone coming along this section of the trail and it was lovely and peaceful.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r3_ZJHSiFvE/UzH0ljDoI2I/AAAAAAAACCs/7KQ3gJJpwn0/s1600/C10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r3_ZJHSiFvE/UzH0ljDoI2I/AAAAAAAACCs/7KQ3gJJpwn0/s1600/C10.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a>At some point after another half or so, you reach an enormous set of steps, that take you up out of the gorge and onto the mountainside. The views from the top here were lovely. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iAHuF_Kv0AA/UzH2hvlBBQI/AAAAAAAACDs/ZMkuVyTnij4/s1600/C8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iAHuF_Kv0AA/UzH2hvlBBQI/AAAAAAAACDs/ZMkuVyTnij4/s1600/C8.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a>I think quite a few people start the Falls walk from the top here, and (sensibly) walk down the the gorge (although they presumably have to walk back up afterwards...?)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-y3HysmNrMWs/UzH1Q2EbibI/AAAAAAAACC8/Wm0PTg3gRrM/s1600/C12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-y3HysmNrMWs/UzH1Q2EbibI/AAAAAAAACC8/Wm0PTg3gRrM/s1600/C12.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
From the point where we left the gorge, it wasn't very clear where we should be heading. I'd been reading about circular paths that lead you through mountain trails and back down to Psilo Dendro... and there was even a map at the entrance to the gorge, although it didn't mark the route we were looking for.<br />
<br />
So we boldly set off along the unmade road that seemed to curve back along the top of the gorge. This road is to your right as you are leaving the gorge. Then we more or less followed our noses, as there were no markers or signs for the next few kms.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RpEGsGn02Q4/UzH0Vi0ct7I/AAAAAAAACCg/Q42QXyOBipQ/s1600/C11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RpEGsGn02Q4/UzH0Vi0ct7I/AAAAAAAACCg/Q42QXyOBipQ/s1600/C11.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a>There were a few forks in the path, but we kept trying to follow the gorge as much as possible. After a while the village of Platres came into view far below us in the distance, and we headed for there. This part of the route was easier than the gorge walk; the paths are well maintained and you are mostly heading downhill.<br />
<br />

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Wq0_ldvUeyo/UzH2i4oJaKI/AAAAAAAACD0/nd20b3EGNXk/s1600/C9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Wq0_ldvUeyo/UzH2i4oJaKI/AAAAAAAACD0/nd20b3EGNXk/s1600/C9.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The village of Platres</td></tr>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The path did eventually take us back to our starting point - I think it was about 8-10kms, but the terrain and the gradients made it feel like more. I definitely recommend this route to anyone who likes exploring the mountains, and prefers the quieter 'off the beaten track' paths of the Troodos. Sage would recommend it to any dog who enjoys splashing around in rivers, jumping over big rocks, and eating pine cones...</div>

</tbody></table>
After almost a year of driving by the impressive Kamares Aqueduct, and talking about exploring the paths that begin from here, we finally stopped there on a cold Sunday, a few weeks back. The Aqueduct was built during the 18th Century, under one of the Ottoman governors of Cyprus - <span style="background-color: white; text-align: -webkit-auto;">Abou Bekir Pasha - to bring water from the area of the Tremithos-Kiti dam, to Larnaca (or Kition as it was then called). </span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Path from Kamares towards the Aliki lake</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<span style="background-color: white; text-align: -webkit-auto;">This water system ran for 15km, 8 of which was along underground channels, 7km along substructions and arcades (such as the Kamares). 3 series of arches remain from this aqueduct; those pictured here are just south of the Kamares neighbourhood of Larnaca. I found this information on the <a href="http://www.romanaqueducts.info/aquasite/larnaca/index.html" target="_blank">Kamares</a> very useful.. </span><br />
<br />
<br />
From this point you can either follow the path at the north end of the arches, which leads to the Hala Sultan Teke mosque and on to Larnaca Airport, or take the path at the southern end, which ends at a small parking area near the Patticheio park.<br />
<br />

On this particular Sunday we chose the path that leads to Patticheio. It is a 4km route (so 8km if you don't have somebody to collect you at the other end).<br />
<br />
There were a few people out and about, some with children, so we had to keep grabbing hold of Sage and holding her out of the way. But there is plenty of space along the way for throwing sticks, watching your dog disappear off into muddy rivers and over-your-head high grasses.<br />
<br />
Like almost all dogs, Sage always enjoys going somewhere new, discovering all the unfamiliar smells of an area. She seemed to really enjoy this walk, running off either side of the path to see what was around. As this is quite a common spot for dog walkers, I suppose there are lots of smells to interest a dog...<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xsP3oPGL6w4/UyYHL6pO3nI/AAAAAAAACAg/wMr936Z5gGQ/s1600/SAM_2221.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xsP3oPGL6w4/UyYHL6pO3nI/AAAAAAAACAg/wMr936Z5gGQ/s1600/SAM_2221.JPG" height="300" width="400" /></a><br />
The length of the walk was just about right for Sage too, although during the summer months we all would have suffered a bit as there is very little shade until you reach the area near Patticheio.<br />
<br />
Do carry your own water if you're walking here in summer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6bGQJHFfP74/UyYGdDYF00I/AAAAAAAACAQ/GUDgD1VFv0o/s1600/SAM_2211.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-6bGQJHFfP74/UyYGdDYF00I/AAAAAAAACAQ/GUDgD1VFv0o/s1600/SAM_2211.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
The path has distance markers, which is useful for runners too.<br />
<br />
After 2-3km passing through marshlands around the edge of the lake, you reach the lake proper (on your right), and you can spot the Hala Sultan Teke in the distance on the other side. This part of the path gets more shaded, with woodland areas. There is even a hide for bird watching (the famous flamingos if you're lucky enough to be there in winter/spring).<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After 4 kms, you reach a part of the lake that has information boards about the historical salt industry that used to flourish in the area. There is a parking area, sometimes a van to buy drinks, bins for dog mess etc. We met a few other dog walkers around this point, and it seems quite a popular evening spot for dog walks. </div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Section of the E4 path that runs through Oroklini Hills</td></tr>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
This is a small secret of the Larnaca district, which I learned about while interviewing for <a href="http://bit.ly/I0Hqn2" target="_blank">Dog of the Month.</a> Pass through the village of Oroklini until you reach a turn off which winds it's way uphill, and signs for the Profitis Ilias church. At the top of this road you will find parking spaces, a picnic area, special dog poo bins (with bags provided!), and great views out over Oroklini down to the coast.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Picnic area at Oroklini Hills</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
From this point you can follow several pathways and explore on foot or bike. One path leads round to the church of Profit Ilias (Elijah). A small water tap at the side of this church has been quite useful in the past - although I'm not sure that is really encouraged..<br />
<br />
In the other direction you pass small woodland areas with pine trees. After the woods the path continues around through fields and you can circle round to the look out point at the highest of the hills.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sE8EDrle4KE/Ux9ybqon3wI/AAAAAAAAB-s/Yubo0FeELqg/s1600/or9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sE8EDrle4KE/Ux9ybqon3wI/AAAAAAAAB-s/Yubo0FeELqg/s1600/or9.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Along these paths we've seen professional cyclists training for competition, as well as others just enjoying some off-road terrain on their bikes. I haven't seen people cycling with their dogs here yet...<br />

We were last here in late summer/early autumn, when Cyprus is at its barest and most arid. The fields were parched white earth and from above on the hills they appear almost desert-like. In some areas, dried thistles and shrubs were the only plant life remaining.<br />
<br />
I do prefer Cyprus in the Spring, after the winter has refreshed the fields and suddenly everywhere you look are grasses and wild flowers. But there is beauty in the dry, empty landscapes too, I think.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Warning - keep in mind that people use some of these fields for hunting during hunting season (autumn/winter). Keep your dog close by or on the leash if you hear or see hunters in the area. </div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Kalavasos dam</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
This is one of my favourite walks so far in Cyprus. The main reason I liked this area so much is because there are no organised, sign-posted routes, just fields and hills and small pathways stretching as far as the foothills of the Troodos mountains in the distance. It has a very wild, unexplored feeling - which is quite hard to find in Cyprus.<br />
<br />
We came here sometime in November and the weather was glorious. It was warm enough to hike just wearing a t-shirt, but no so hot that you have to carry gallons of water with you. There was very little shade, so this is not a walk to do in high summer.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_9QP9hSOHcE/UwsjzfsYS7I/AAAAAAAAB5k/AKB8TtROpdk/s1600/kal4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_9QP9hSOHcE/UwsjzfsYS7I/AAAAAAAAB5k/AKB8TtROpdk/s1600/kal4.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a>We left the car just next to the dam, and headed off on what seemed, at first sight, to be a path (round to the left of the reservoir if you're facing the water from the dam).<br />
<br />
<br />
The path soon ended, and we found ourselves sliding down loose scree towards the water - where the elusive path seemed to continue on its way.<br />
<br />
<br />
In fact, the path did continue, but only as far as the next small outcrop, then again we had to go cross country to continue round. On each of these 'outcrops', which formed little man-made beaches all the way around the reservoir, people had set up fishing lines and were enjoying a Sunday by the dam fishing, having picnics, just sitting and chatting with friends. I noticed that quite a few of them had driven to the spot where they were fishing, but I didn't see any access and don't know how they got there!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ow0pfd84Q3Y/Uwsj0eknjfI/AAAAAAAAB5s/unfq2B5-pCg/s1600/kal3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ow0pfd84Q3Y/Uwsj0eknjfI/AAAAAAAAB5s/unfq2B5-pCg/s1600/kal3.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aIM4bXWiqlA/UwsjtLhV-vI/AAAAAAAAB5c/N32xSb2d56g/s1600/kal2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aIM4bXWiqlA/UwsjtLhV-vI/AAAAAAAAB5c/N32xSb2d56g/s1600/kal2.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
We walked for quite a while, scrambling up and down the banks, trying to circumnavigate the reservoir. We got about halfway. After edging our way round a particularly narrow path, over loose stones and scree, through brambles and spiky plants, we saw that the 'path' we were heading for was not a path. I'm sure we could have found a way to continue round, but we took another direction and headed off towards the hills trying to circle our way back towards the dam.<br />
<br />
<br />
After a short while walking, we found ourselves on a small but asphalted road, near an army base. Following this road led us eventually back down to the dam (and our car).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4IoOVikuwIg/UwskB77dFlI/AAAAAAAAB6A/Ga53ZWwccbQ/s1600/kal7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4IoOVikuwIg/UwskB77dFlI/AAAAAAAAB6A/Ga53ZWwccbQ/s1600/kal7.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
So, I can't really recommend a particular route, but I do recommend this area for a hike for anyone keen on hiking and exploring. You should be prepared for a bit of scrambling (good shoes or hiking boots are a must) and carry water with you.<br />
<br />
<br />
Alternatively, bring a cooler with beers (and a fishing line if you've got a license) and enjoy some time away from the noise and bustle of the towns and beaches.<br />
<br />
<br />
This is a lovely place to walk with your dog, as there are few people around and plenty of space for everybody. There are no roads, so you don't have to worry about traffic. There are no organised picnic areas or parks with sign-posts forbidding dogs. Just a big wild space for running around.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aae61PO2Exg/Uwsj1Vq9i4I/AAAAAAAAB50/IVhhxumwvcU/s1600/kal5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aae61PO2Exg/Uwsj1Vq9i4I/AAAAAAAAB50/IVhhxumwvcU/s1600/kal5.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<b>A warning</b> - As we were scuttling around on non-existant paths and pushing our way through overgrown terrain, I did have a minor panic about snakes. There is only one snake in Cyprus that is a threat to humans, but several that could cause a nasty bite to a curious dog. It's a good idea to be aware of the possible dangers at all times of the year, but during their mating season (April-June in Cyprus) you should be particularly vigilant. I usually try to make noise and cause a disturbance when passing through undergrowth (or hit a stick on the ground when walking). I also keep Sage on her leash if we are walking through any area where I can't see all the terrain, or if I feel like she might stick her nose into a bush or snake-like home.<br />
<br />
I wrote about the potential dangers to your dog in Cyprus, including snakes, in a previous post: <a href="http://travelcypruswithyourdog.blogspot.com/search/label/DANGERS%20OF%20CYPRUS">http://bit.ly/1jtmd2z</a><br />

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
Ok, ok, I admit it, the Neolithic site of Choirokoitia is extremely important, interesting and well-preserved... but it's not a particularly good place to visit with your dog. For starters, obviously dogs are not permitted inside the site, and you can't see very much from outside of the fence. Secondly, you lose a large part of the experience if you don't go in and wander around the replica round houses, or climb the steep steps and see the view from the top of the site. Thirdly, the area around the site is not particularly interesting for dogs - a few rather soulless cafes and a car park.....<br />
<br />
But never mind all that. You should go anyway, even if it means taking turns to wait outside with the dog while the rest of your party get to enjoy the site.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">View of Choirokoitia from outside the fence</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The site is located near the new highway between Larnaca and Lemesos, in the foothills of the Troodos mountain range.<br />
<br />
It was first excavated by Dikaios, for the Dept. of Antiquities of Cyprus, from the mid 1930s. A team from the French <i>Centre National de Recherche Scientifique</i> took over in '76, led by Le Brun. The site has been on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List since the late '90s.<br />
<br />
<br />
The settlement at Choirokoitia was founded during the 7th Millennium BC and provides invaluable information about some of the earliest sedentary communities in Cyprus. The inhabitants of Choirokoitia (and their contemporaries) used tools made of flint and stone, rather than metal. They did not fire pottery, but carved stone such as diabase to make vessels.<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<iframe frameborder="0" height="350" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="https://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&q=cyprus+choirokoitia+map&oe=UTF-8&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Choirokoitia,+Larnaca,+Cyprus&ll=34.796389,33.336389&spn=0.001348,0.002384&t=h&z=14&output=embed" width="425"></iframe><br />
<br />
As at Lempa (see <a href="http://bit.ly/1exxsar" target="_blank">previous post</a>), archaeologists have constructed replicas at one end of the site. Unlike those at Lempa, however, these are not used for ongoing experimental archaeology, but rather to enhance the visitors' experience of the site.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Modern replicas of the Neolithic buildings at Choirokoitia</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Continuing around the site, the foundations of a large number of round stone buildings, of varying sizes, are situated one above the other up the hill. Of particular interest is the intricate entranceway, which would have forced visitors to follow a tight passage that zig-zags, before allowing them to enter - thereby giving residents time and opportunity to defend themselves.<br />
<br />
Choirokoitia was abandoned c.5200 BC, then there seems to have been a considerable gap in the archaeological record in Cyprus, before we see the emergence of a new phase, the Ceramic Neolithic.<br />

I have been to this site several times, but I could only find photos of the last time I was there, when I actually waited outside with Sage! I'll upload some more from inside the site as soon as possible.<br />
<br />
<br />
So, on the positive side, if you are forced to wait outside, there are trees for shade, and cafes to buy a drink. While we were waiting, I took Sage for a little exploration around the area, and discovered the dry river bed and nearby fields. It's not the best walk, but it's a good place to have a rest stop on the road between Larnaca-Lemesos, to let your dog have a run around.<br />

When most people think of Cyprus, they think of beaches and blue sea, perhaps night life, maybe history... I think very few people would associate Cyprus with flamingos. Yet every year, as the winter rains re-fill the salt lakes, hundreds of Greater Flamingos arrive and feed in the lakes. They can be found in the salt lakes near Larnaca (Aliki) and Lemesos (Akrotiri), as well as in the wetlands and smaller lakes around the island, such as Oroklini and the area by Kalavassos. They arrive in about December and stay until around March. </div>

A few flamingo facts:<br />
<div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Flamingos are a white colour when born. The pink colouring comes from the high quantities of beta carotene in their diet. The less healthy birds will retain a whiter-brown colour</li>
<li>Greater flamingos feed on insects, algae, worms and vegetation</li>
<li>They have a lifespan of up to 40 years</li>
<li>Greater flamingos are monogamous</li>
<li>They have a wing span of up to 1.7m</li>
</ul>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love going to see these birds. Sometimes you can just make them out from a distance, out over the Salt Lake at Larnaca. Other times there seems to be hundreds of them spread out in small groups. At the small nature reserve on the road to Oroklini from the Dhekelia Road, there is a small lake by the road where you get a great view of the birds. Here you see flamingos mixing with much less 'exotic' ducks as well as other migratory water birds. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

This post doesn't have much to do with my dog, actually. But we do spend a lot of time by the lake in Larnaca together, with and without flamingos. I'm not sure what she makes of them - you can see in the video that she seems interested, but not too bothered. Fortunately she hasn't tried to chase them....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The number of flamingos wintering in Cyprus changes each year, depending on rainfall and how much water is in the lakes and wetlands. A Cypriot friend of ours said that this year the numbers seem to be particularly low, and other years he remembers the lake turning pink from the thousands of flamingo visitors. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As well as problems caused by a lack of rain, flamingos and other migratory water birds are suffering from the destruction of their natural habitat (the wetland areas) through over-development. On this very built up island, preserving the small areas of wildlife that remain is extremely important.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another major concern is the close proximity of Larnaca airport to the Aliki, their favourite of the feeding grounds in Cyprus. I have read that there are literally hundreds of collisions every year between the birds and low flying aircraft.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I really hope that this amazing wildlife is given the support and conditions needed to enjoy their holidays in Cyprus too.</div>

Flying with your pet can be pricey. This is undeniable. But I have recently come across travel forums that are giving false advice to people wanting to travel within Europe with their pets. Some airlines <b>insist </b>that you organise your travel through a pet travel agency - which then charge around 250€ to be the middle man. But this is NOT true of all airlines and this is an extra cost you can safely avoid.<br />
<br />
So, if you want to fly with your pet to Cyprus from the UK, France, Germany, Netherlands, Greece and various other locations, I would recommend trying Cyprus Airways (<a href="http://cyprusair.com/">http://cyprusair.com</a>)<br />
<br />
Here is the price list for pet travel to ALL destinations, for a single ticket, with <b>Cyprus Airways</b>:<br />
<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Up to 8kg, a dog (or cat) may be travel with you, in a carrier case, inside the cabin. Cost - 40€</li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>From 9-25kg, your dog (or very fat cat??) must travel in the pressure and oxygen controlled section of the hold, in a suitable carrier case. Cost - 80€</li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>From 25kg and upwards, rules as above. Cost - 160€</li>
</ul>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Note: The dog owner is responsible for buying a suitable sized carrier case, pet passport, microchip etc</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For flights to Greece (from UK, France, Spain, Italy, Germany and many other locations), I recommend <b>Aegean</b> (<a href="http://en.aegeanair.com/">http://en.aegeanair.com</a>)</div>

British Airways is one of the airlines that insist on customers using an additional 'pet travel agency' to book plane tickets for their pets. The BA website does not include prices for pet travel, and makes it almost impossible for you to contact either staff at BA or at the handlers they use <i>IAG Cargo</i>. I had a polite but brief response to my email from IAG Cargo, informing me that they do not deal with individuals, only with pet travel agents, so could not answer my questions (regarding regulations, price etc). I still do not know how much BA charge for a single pet ticket from the UK to Cyprus, for example, but you can bet that with the additional cost of the pet travel agency, on top of the ticket price, this is going to be quite a sum!<br />
<br />
The budget airlines (Ryanair, EasyJet) do not accept animals in the cabins or in the hold of the planes.<br />
<br />
Have a look at this previous post: <a href="http://bit.ly/1g3yyaN">http://bit.ly/1g3yyaN</a> for info on the documents and health requirements etc that pets need before travel<br />

Speaking to some friends last night, I found myself defending Cyprus against criticisms that it is not so culturally and historically rich as elsewhere in the Mediterranean, such as Greece or Malta. I don't know why people have this idea of Cyprus; it is simply wrong.<br />

One of the most exciting things about this island is the fact that you can't go more than a few metres in any direction without stumbling on yet another site of archaeological or historical significance. From the spectacular Neolithic structures at the UNESCO site of Choirokoitia (as well as the lesser known site of Kalavassos Tenta), the wealth of Bronze Age sites throughout the island, such as Kition and Enkomi, the outstanding mosaics from the Roman settlements at Kourion and Nea Paphos, the beautiful Byzantine painted churches dotted all over the Troodos mountain range, to the fortifications, the mosques, the monuments..... the length of time that people have been living here, on this one small island, and leaving behind glimpses of their lives, is actually incredible.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">At the gate to the site at Lempa</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
So today's post is about just one of these amazing sites, Chalcolithic Lempa... with your dog.<br />
<br />
Lempa is an archaeological site 4 km north of Paphos. It was excavated by the University of Edinburgh in the late '70s. The settlement was formed during the Chalcolithic period (3800-2500 BC), the transitional period between the Neolithic (Stone Age) and the Bronze Age.<br />
<br />
A number of stone female figurines were found at Lempa, most of which are exhibited in the Paphos Archaeological Museum, although the large, phallic figurine (seen in the photo to the left) is on display in the Archaeological Museum in Nicosia.<br />
<br />
Not much remains of the Chalcolithic site, except for the foundations of large round stone buildings. Visitors to this site would find it difficult to interpret what they were seeing, if it weren't for the amazing reconstructions that have been constructed close by.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DSguUYATW-k/UvTAeg7h66I/AAAAAAAABzg/GwDvjcKaynA/s1600/lem8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DSguUYATW-k/UvTAeg7h66I/AAAAAAAABzg/GwDvjcKaynA/s1600/lem8.jpg" height="174" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Remains of circular building at Lempa</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
These reconstructions began in the early '80s, as the Lempa Experimental Village, and were a collaboration between the local residents, the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus, and archaeologists.<br />
<div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xelhwi3cDPs/UvTAFyAHA2I/AAAAAAAABzA/uR2iAF18QEU/s1600/lem4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xelhwi3cDPs/UvTAFyAHA2I/AAAAAAAABzA/uR2iAF18QEU/s1600/lem4.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Reconstructions at Lempa</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<div>
These buildings are extremely important to understanding what materials and methods were used, how you can create such structures with traditional tools, how the buildings deteriorate and collapse etc. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Other activities have also been tested there, such as pottery firing and prehistoric cooking techniques.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TzTyfW79RnE/UvTATI_qq7I/AAAAAAAABzQ/LeKYpSPjvfI/s1600/lem6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TzTyfW79RnE/UvTATI_qq7I/AAAAAAAABzQ/LeKYpSPjvfI/s1600/lem6.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a>Some of the houses have been left unfinished, so visitors can really see the materials that were used to make the mud bricks and mud plaster. Other buildings have been finished with a layer of mud plaster, then painted with a traditional red earth pigment.<br />
<br />
This is an amazing resource for learning about prehistoric Cyprus - what life might have been like, the houses they lived in, how they built them, how they cooked.<br />

So, can you visit Lempa with your dog?<br />
<br />
I went to the Chalcolithic site of Lempa while my parents were visiting me last autumn. I took my dog Sage along, as we were already out for the day. Dogs and archaeological sites don't usually mix very well, but this site was quite convenient.<br />
<br />
Firstly, you can see a great deal of this fairly small and compact site from outside of the perimeter fence.<br />
<br />
Secondly, there are trees around the fence, providing shade, so it's possible to tie your dog outside in the shade while you go to see the remains (again, it is a small site, so you can stay in sight of your dog).<br />
<br />
Lastly, there are very few visitors to this site (nobody while we were there), so if your dog makes a bit of a fuss being left outside, you can wait for a quiet time when any other visitors have left.<br />
<br />

It would be irresponsible of me to recommend dog owners take their dogs to Finikoudes (Palm Beach) in Larnaca, as there as signposts clearly forbidding dogs on this beach (and almost every beach in Cyprus).<br />
But, when I see the beach looking like this.....<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Do be careful walking your dogs here, I have heard of outrageous fines for having dogs on the beach in Cyprus. Still, from November until about April, once all the sun loungers have been collected up, the umbrellas packed away, the kiosks have been locked down, then the beach is perfect for chasing after tennis balls and running around on the sand!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Although I did see quite a few dog walkers here even in June-July. Just now, in January-February however, it's great for a lunchtime run around. The path has been extended beyond the fortress towards Mackenzie Beach now, meaning you could do a long walk along the coast, all the way from Larnaca marina to Mackenzie.</div>

If you're looking for somewhere to stop for a warming drink around the seafront here, we have been welcomed by several of the bar owners in this area (see previous post, drinking in Larnaca: <a href="http://bit.ly/1hVWPBg">http://bit.ly/1hVWPBg</a>)<br />
<br />
One of our favourites, however, at least for this time of year, is the Finis Beach Bar. Again, I avoid this place in summer with Sage, as it is located right on the sand. During winter though, it's great to walk down for a drink at the beach bar (open until about 5-6 in the evening) and watch the sea. Staff have always been super friendly to us and Sage, even bringing her water (unasked for) last time, and stopping to pet her.<br />
<br />
It can get a bit cold at the Beach Bar, we have always sat outside when we are there with Sage, but you can buy a range of teas, coffees, or hot chocolate to warm you on the inside.<br />

<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dzGfMee9hAQufdNWtrCtMkZseDdyvTO1HZTovLWxHNpRPl3x-Hr7_a2MZSX9w2VPVnIWVVGJP24MwKIlU0LNw' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
These last few weeks I've been going back to places I've already discovered, partly just because I enjoyed them the first time, partly because I want to see how they are in different seasons. And my conclusion? Cyprus is even more beautiful in the winter! I love that I can go to the beach with my dog and there is nobody there to yell at us. I love the peace and quiet of the coast, even in places like Ayia Napa, without hordes of tourists. I love that I don't have to spend the middle part of the day hiding out from the sun in an air conditioned room. So far, winter in Cyprus means freedom to explore all the places that are out of bounds, or difficult during the summer, with great weather to enjoy them.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JNgHJYG5d2o/UuJKvaJ52FI/AAAAAAAABvg/_dR5SXTveCA/s1600/gre5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JNgHJYG5d2o/UuJKvaJ52FI/AAAAAAAABvg/_dR5SXTveCA/s1600/gre5.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I recently went back to the coastal area between the two tourist resorts of Ayia Napa and Protaras - Cape Gkreko. This area was great in summer too - with few people on the paths, and some rocky areas to climb down to the sea to cool off.<br />
<br />
However, every time I had been here in the summer season, the tranquility was shattered by day tripper boats which take out groups of tourists to party on board, and blast music and games over waters with megaphones (people having fun! Bah humbug!) There is also absolutely no shade on this entire peninsular, which we learned the hard way one very hot day last June. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OIIuRnfQq10/UuJKI1f9YVI/AAAAAAAABuc/_dvSUQ0XWmU/s1600/gre10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OIIuRnfQq10/UuJKI1f9YVI/AAAAAAAABuc/_dvSUQ0XWmU/s1600/gre10.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
In the summer months, I would recommend this as a good place for an early evening walk, and perhaps a swim. In the winter, it's better to make the most of the warmer midday sun, and enjoy this area from about 11-15.00.<br />
<br />
This time round, Sage and I started our walk from a point near the 'entrance' to the cape, where there are signs for the Aphrodite Trail. The trail was a bit confusing, I must admit. The information board says that this 2km trail is part of the Aphrodite Cultural Route (also found at Paphos), although nothing remains of any religious site here, and no further information is available. After what seemed like much less than 2km I reached a point where signs directed me onto different paths altogether, either towards the sea caves or to the Agii Anargyri church, and I realised I had somehow finished/lost the Aphrodite Trail.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xqHHDKSFuB0/UuJKdgL7isI/AAAAAAAABvA/ZpZ_wEiCouE/s1600/gre14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xqHHDKSFuB0/UuJKdgL7isI/AAAAAAAABvA/ZpZ_wEiCouE/s1600/gre14.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I continued down towards the promontory, trying to decide which route I should take, as the scenery in both directions was spectacular. In the end I followed the path around to the Agii Anargyri church, simply because it was a slightly longer walk (2.5km from the end of the Aphrodite Trail as opposed to 1km to the Sea Caves). Here is the link to the CTO page on walks around Cape Gkreko: <a href="http://bit.ly/1jIDLaI">http://bit.ly/1jIDLaI</a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1MFPohe21wk/UuJKL65DKHI/AAAAAAAABus/EeoCFm5Wyfw/s1600/gre1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1MFPohe21wk/UuJKL65DKHI/AAAAAAAABus/EeoCFm5Wyfw/s1600/gre1.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a>Out on the promontory, I couldn't believe how green everything was. I am used to a white, arid, dusty Cyprus (which is also beautiful in its own way), but to see a field of grass, and new green plants growing around the coast was really special. </div>
<br />
The only other people I saw all day were some cyclists out with their dogs around this promontory, and some fishermen around by the church.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Exsc-6M3AF0/UuJKjUgQOxI/AAAAAAAABvM/mFjkV94ojnU/s1600/gre2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Exsc-6M3AF0/UuJKjUgQOxI/AAAAAAAABvM/mFjkV94ojnU/s1600/gre2.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
We walked around as far as the picnic area on the way to Konnos Bay, stopping to explore the sea cave behind the Agii Anargyri church. I got a bit nervous at the cave by the church. There is apparently Holy Water there, but I wasn't brave enough to go and investigate (I had a neurotic panic that Sage would get swept in and I would have to jump in after her, and there was nobody around to help us back to shore....<i>anyway....</i>)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

A final couple of notes:<br />
Be a bit careful of the ferrel cats that have made a home around the church - I counted at least 6 of them and they looked they could see off a threat to their territory if they wanted to.<br />
<br />
The water tap at the church wasn't working when I last visited - carry water for your dog with you just in case.<br />

I have been making the most of winter, exploring parts of Cyprus that would be too busy in summer to go to with my dog. As well as being fewer people around, the weather is also much better for hiking and being outdoors, as you don't have to plan your day to avoid the midday heat, or carry litres and litres of water wherever you go.<br />
<br />
These photos are from a short trip we made to Governor's Beach, towards the end of December. I couldn't believe how many people were out and about, enjoying the beautiful sunny weather. I saw people swimming from the sandy part of the beach, people out dog-walking along the rocks to the west of the tourist resort, countless small fishing boats waiting around the fish farms out in the bay... It was really glorious.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fishing boats around the fish farms</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I had been avoiding this part of the coast, as Cyprus has such a busy coast, and such strict rules about dogs on beaches. But this suits us fine - we can enjoy the seaside, the sandy beaches and the beautiful clear water, during the wintertime, and hide out inland during the summer.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We could have continued around the coast along the rocks and small paths for about 4km, until Latchi Beach (Ayios Georgios Alamanou), but we mostly just wandered around admiring the view and sniffing rocks. I'll definitely go back and explore this coastal walking trail before the summer crowds arrive.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We went back to this part of the coast yesterday, and took even more photos! The sun glistening on the blue sea and the brilliant white of the chalky stone by the shore just demand photography. We walked a little further around in the direction of <span style="text-align: left;">Latchi</span><span style="text-align: left;"> Beach, but just ambling rather than following the path. I discovered a couple of small sandy beaches, and plenty of areas of smooth rock where we might be able to risk a quick summer swim with our dog.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Along the main road through the village of Panagia</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I chose the village of Panagia for a weekend break due to its location up in the hills north of Paphos, a short drive from Cedar Valley and the Kykkos Monastery, which I wanted to visit. Searching the usual sites for eco-tourism apartments (<a href="https://www.agrotourism.com.cy/">https://www.agrotourism.com.cy</a>) I found at least 2 dog-friendly apartments, both of which looked beautiful.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Palati Apartments</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We stayed in the Palati Apartments (see previous post <a href="http://bit.ly/HrVe9Y">http://bit.ly/HrVe9Y</a>) which I fully recommend. Another eco-tourism option at Panagia, the Archontiko tou Meletiou, was fully booked for the period (see the <i>CTO</i> website for contact details and information <a href="http://bit.ly/1cJvC2X">http://bit.ly/1cJvC2X</a>). I did contact the owners of Archontiko tou Meletiou, however, and they told me that dogs are permitted in their accommodation.<br />

Panagia is the birthplace of Archbishop Makarios III, and you can visit his childhood home (next door to the Archontiko Apartments). It was closed when we passed by.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There is not much to do in this village, except sit in one of the many small kafeneia and watch the world go by, or try some of the wine that this region is famous for. When we were there, in late October, there were few people around, and bars and tavernas closed early in the evenings. </div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">In the restaurant area of the Oniro Hotel</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
One evening, we tried the restaurant of the only place that was open past 8 in the evening - the Oniro (dream) Hotel. This hotel is located towards the edge of the village beyond the Museum of Cultural Foundation (which houses personal objects and photographs that belonged to Archbishop Makarios III).<br />
<br />
I must admit that on a cold autumnal evening, this place seemed a bit dreary. We were the only customers. The huge tv, set on an endless Greek news channel, dominated the restaurant. Very little of the menu was available. And the whole place was lit with strong artificial lighting.<br />
<br />
On the other hand, the owners and serving staff were extremely friendly to us and had no problem with us bringing Sage inside while we ate dinner. They explained that they didn't prepare much food in the evenings as there were so few customers, and made a big effort to bring us whatever they could, including some oranges they picked themselves from the gardens. I can't really recommend this place for style or atmosphere, at least for the autumn/winter period, but I can recommend them for their hospitality and for allowing our large dog inside on a cold evening.<br />

This village is a lovely base for exploring Western Cyprus. We spend one long day driving around Cedar Valley and the Western Troodos mountains (see earlier post: <a href="http://bit.ly/1fofsfX">http://bit.ly/1fofsfX</a>), and another long day around Paphos and the coast.<br />
<div>
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QNBRVJl1N40/Us_ioLT8b-I/AAAAAAAABnM/kJfout-F6gI/s1600/pan5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QNBRVJl1N40/Us_ioLT8b-I/AAAAAAAABnM/kJfout-F6gI/s1600/pan5.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a><br />
There is so much to see in this area and it's great to have a quiet, mountain base to relax in at the end of a day's exploring.<br />
<br />
<div>
<div>
Finally, there are a couple of mini-markets for provisions in Panagia, and plenty of short dog-walks in and around the village. </div>

I haven't spent much time in Ayia Napa. I just thought it would be too busy in the summer to enjoy a day out there with my dog. But on a recent trip with some friends who live close by there, I realised I have been missing out on some nice walks and dog-friendly cafe-bars.<br />
<br />
We were there in December and the scenery was lovely. We walked around the small harbour, then back along the wooden path by the sea in the direction of Sandy Bay. Sage had a run around and I collected wild sea fennel that was growing on the rocks (I'm not sure when is the best time of year to collect this, but this part of Cyprus is great for sea fennel!)<br />
<br />
There were a few people out walking, but not too many to feel like we were in the way with our dog.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Harbour at Ayia Napa</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
As the sun set and it got colder, we went to warm up in the Antica Gelateria del Corso Cafe-Bar. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, and had no problem with us sitting with Sage in the area of the cafe that is protected by an awning. The other customers there were also very friendly, and enjoyed playing with her!<br />
<br />
They serve all sorts of drinks and huge range of desserts and ice creams. Their hot chocolate is especially good after a cold winters walk with your dog!<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Antica Gelateria del Corso</td></tr>

Now I'd like to go back and try out other bars and a taverna or two in the area, to see if I can find dog-friendly places before the summer crowds arrive!</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sage on the Atalante Trail</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Honestly, this hike is probably more enjoyable at almost any other time of year... but we walked it recently and loved it. The Atalante Trail circles Chionistra (Mount Olympus) on a similar route to the Artemis Trail (see previous post: <a href="http://bit.ly/1h1wdRV">http://bit.ly/1h1wdRV</a>), but at a lower altitude (1700-1750m). This circular trail starts just outside the large car park at Troodos Square and winds its way around the mountain for 14km. The trail is flat and easy to walk, rated 2 out of 3 for difficulty.<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4OqICrUxm9g/Ur2JPFttvDI/AAAAAAAABig/7sq4B5c46rI/s1600/at1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4OqICrUxm9g/Ur2JPFttvDI/AAAAAAAABig/7sq4B5c46rI/s320/at1.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Start of trail</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
After 3-4km, the Atalante passes a disused chromium mine, as well as dense woodland of black pine and juniper.<br />
<br />
At certain points around the Artemis Trail there are fantastic views down towards the coast at Lemessos. I imagine views from the Atalante are also great, but when we did this hike a couple of weeks ago, there was so much fog that we couldn't see much past the edge of the path.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QWZecXVnRbI/Ur2JWV0qQ3I/AAAAAAAABi0/q-4h16kU6tw/s1600/at4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QWZecXVnRbI/Ur2JWV0qQ3I/AAAAAAAABi0/q-4h16kU6tw/s400/at4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
It was also bitterly cold and drizzling, so we didn't really stop to enjoy the scenery. In fact, we were almost running the trail, and finished in under 3 hours.<br />
<br />
I'm probably not selling this, but it was a great place to let Sage have a long run around through the woods. The fog and drizzle added to the atmosphere, and gave us a taste of winter that we had all been missing all summer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-R1E7DHVByos/Ur2I8THfFUI/AAAAAAAABiU/_W8mfm465fo/s1600/at2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-R1E7DHVByos/Ur2I8THfFUI/AAAAAAAABiU/_W8mfm465fo/s320/at2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This walk would also be manageable during summer, due to the dense woodland. Carry water for yourselves and your dog. If you are planning a winter walk, wear good shoes for muddy paths, lots of layers, and a waterproof coat. Some dog biscuits for energy along the way, and an old towel to dry off wet dogs when you get back to Troodos Square are also advisable.<br />

A week or so back we went for a weekend away at the dog-friendly Linos Inn at Kakopetria. Sage came too, of course.<br />
<br />
Linos Inn allows dogs in 4 or 5 of their rooms, while the rest of the rooms are kept dog free. Dog-friendly rooms are slightly separate from the central part of the hotel (with reception, dining room etc), so that non-dog-loving guests are not disturbed. In addition, these rooms are decorated with furry friends in mind - there are no rugs/carpets on the floors, furnishings are kept to a minimum, rooms have access to small external courtyards or balconies.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Linos Inn</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Rooms at the Linos Inn are a bit fancier than the typical agro-tourism style places I am used to, but there wasn't actually a big difference in price (around 100€ per night for double room). Anyway, it's nice to treat yourself, and your dog, to a bit of 'luxury accommodation' every now and then.<br />
<br />
While I was looking for a hotel or apartment, I had the following criteria in mind: winter break in a mountain village; cosy and romantic; dogs allowed too.<br />
Linos Inn is located just above the village square in Kakopetria, up in the Troodos mountains. You can choose from a variety of rooms, with or without fire places, with single/double jacuzzi, with/without mountain views etc. It is dog-friendly.<br />
<br />
So, ticked all the boxes really.<br />

A full breakfast of cereal, bacon and eggs, bread and cheese etc. is included in the price. On Friday and Saturday evenings there is live music in the hotel restaurant, and we were advised to book a table as it's a popular restaurant, not just with people staying at the hotel. The food was good, especially the lovely homemade ravioli!<br />
<br />
I really enjoyed wandering around the village of Kakopetria too. Many of the houses along the smaller, back roads of the village preserve the traditional Cypriot architectural style, with mud-brick walls and wooden balconies almost touching across the narrow streets. In the evenings, the smell of wood fires really added to the wintery atmosphere.<br />

Just down the road from the Linos Inn, we found some steps down to the river by the Mill Hotel. Pets are not allowed at this hotel. I imagine it would be crowded there by the river during the summer, but when we were there, in mid December, there was nobody around. This was a great place to take Sage for a quick run around, away from traffic. There are also lots of great trails nearby for hiking with your dog, and you can even ski there (at Chionistra) for a few months in winter.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lady, at home</td></tr>

This is Lady.<br />
Lady is a very pretty 3 year old dog who lives in my neighbourhood. She is a Kokoni - a small domestic breed known in Greece since antiquity (images of this breed of dog can be found on ancient pottery, friezes etc).<br />
<br />
Lady was given to my neighbour a year or so ago and they have become inseparable.<br />
<br />
Despite her small size, she is a tough, fearless little dog. She shares her home with 2 large dogs, and still seems to call the shots! She also plays chasing my (much bigger) dog around the field in our neighbourhood.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oIu08zmRrMo/Uqwbwdy7qvI/AAAAAAAABdc/wbnPYe4-Qks/s1600/lady2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oIu08zmRrMo/Uqwbwdy7qvI/AAAAAAAABdc/wbnPYe4-Qks/s400/lady2.jpg" width="302" /></a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Most days, Lady goes for walks around the neighbourhood in central Larnaca. There are several patches of grassy wasteland where she has a run around off leash. Other, longer walks in Larnaca include the promenade at Palm Beach (Finikoudes) and the picnic area by the Salt Lake (Aliki) near the mosque of Hala Sultan Teke.<br />
<br />
They also go to another area around the Salt Lake - Patticheio - which is closer to the town centre (see map). Here you can follow pathways through the woods and park land, down to the lake. Quite a few dog walkers can be found in this area at evenings and weekends. In the winter months look out for migratory flamingos on the lake.<br />
<br />
For days out further afield, Lady and my neighbours sometimes visit the villages surrounding Larnaca, such as Mazotos. They collect the wild greens (χόρτα) that grow in the fields there, while Lady gets to run around and explore new areas. So, everyone gets to spend their day out doing things they like!<br />
